11/19/08 Homework for tonight is math 58b and study the math facts. In your child's red folder in "keep at home" there should be a practice sheet over the math facts we will have a test on this Friday. The test is timed and they only have two minutes to finish 25 problems. This is one of the cases where old-fashioned repetition works wonders.
The spelling test will take place on Monday. If you need to confirm the spelling words, look at the entry on 11/17/08.
We started adding three or more single digit numbers today. Part of helping the students keep this straight is to find the digits that have a sum of 10 and add them first. So if there is a problem of 3+4+7+6+3=, I have the students look to find any sums of 10. I have them draw a line to connect them and write a 10 below the line. So, in the example, 3+7=10, 4+6=10, with 3 left over (which they circle). So we count by 10, and then add 3. That gives us the answer of 23. You will find a couple of these problems on the bottom of the math homework sheet.
We also began learning about the use of an apostrophe in a possessive noun. When a noun is possessive, you add an apostrophe s. Example: The boy's desk is dirty.
We will be learning about plural possessive nouns over the next couple of days.
Have a restful evening,
Mr. Lang
11/18/08 Homework for tonight is math 57b.
Your student should have brought home quite a bit of graded work today. A couple of points: There were some pieces in the stack that have a letter grade, but I did not record. They have to do with writing letters. The students were asked to make sure capital letters were used, proper use of commas and other punctuation. This is really our first attempt at writing letters and so most of our students had a fairly low grade. After I corrected the papers, I realized I wasn't going to record the grades until we worked on them some more in class.
I was faced with a decision to throw them out or give them back and use them to show the mistakes we made and let them take them home. I decided to send them home. I did tell the students I wouldn't count their grade, but being a parent myself, I know what I might think if my child told me that. You can believe them today!
To see if any one paper is recorded or not, you can go on line to the PowerSchool site and check each paper. I try to give enough information to help you determine which entry correlates to each paper. If you have any questions, let me know.
I will not be at Mass Wednesday morning. I will be back at school by the time the students come back for Math.
Have a blessed evening,
Mr. Lang

We will have a religion test tomorrow covering the following topics:
The Ten Commandments are special laws that God gave to his people. In commandments 1, 2, and 3 we learn ways to love God. In commandments 4 through 10 we learn ways to love ourselves and others.
Jesus taught that we should love everyone.
The commandment "Remember to keep holy the Lord's Day" reminds us to join our parish each Saturday evening or Sunday for Mass.
The commandment, "You shall not steal" reminds us to care of our own things and not to take things from others.
Wash your hands frequently, there is a lot of coughing and sore throats going around.
Have a good evening,
Mr. Lang
